A jury said Wyeth's weight-loss medicine used as part of the fen-phen combination damaged four Utah women's hearts. The company may be liable for as much $2.1 million in damages to cover future medical expenses.
A second phase of the case to determine whether Wyeth is liable for any damages is scheduled to start Oct. 25. Jurors in state court in Philadelphia deliberated about two hours today before finding Wyeth's Pondimin drug scarred the heart valves of Jeri McMurdie and three other women.
The jury in McMurdie's case was the seventh in Philadelphia in the past four months to consider heart-valve claims against Wyeth's now-withdrawn diet drugs. Other juries have rejected claims by former
users or awarded relatively small verdicts to women who once used the appetite suppressant. The company faces thousands of other fen-phen claims in the same court.
A spokesman for Madison, New Jersey-based Wyeth, said he couldn't comment on the verdict and the judge has ordered lawyers not to comment.
